The Saturday afternoon Matinee

Back when a dollar was a fortune

Just about every neighborhood had a movie theater and the Saturday double feature meant that you were out of your parents hair for about four hours.

If you weren't fortunate enough to have a neighborhood theater, the bus provided reliable transportation to the downtown movie houses where the variety of movies seemed endless.

Popcorn and a soda were a quarter so a Saturday of entertainment seemed like a bargain, provided you got all your chores done
